Links to M-Files documents from other applications

Hi there,

We are currently in a process of building and migrating set of documents from custom build application into M-Files. Unfortunately, we have found out that there are many systems (mostly web applications) that provide links to documents in that custom application. As you can imagine, we will break all those apps.

We promote M-Files Desktop Client application due to best feature set and functionality for our use case. That would also mean that we would like to use m-files:// links. Would those work from custom web application?

Another idea which quite often occurs is to create own REST service where those applications would provide unique document id and we would provide them back URL (perhaps again m-files:// link) to document in M-Files. That would be potentially a way to reduce hard-coding and provide creation of dynamic linking. Have someone implemented something similar? What are experiences?

Thanks

Dejan

  • Hi Dejan,

just as an example out of daily business:

We store purchase invoices originally captured in German Finance Software DIAMANT [ for your info: https://www.diamant-software.de ] into M-Files within a customer project. The archived documents were called from the Web browser version of DIAMANT also via m-files://... according to the description who to build URLs (should be in the KB-Vault).

I guess that's the same thing you want to do out of your web application. There were some browser security settings which can cause error messages like "Do you really want to do this." - but if it's inside your company than you should get this point managed like the IT administrator of our customer did.

Other possibiliy would be to include the new web application as a kind of widget or "app" directly into your web application like done as Teams integration. But I don't know it there is a description how to include it avaialble alreasy - or if it's only available for M-Files standard development. Would be a good point for better integration of different applications.

    Greetings from Germany,

    Falk
