I am currently looking over the archiving process but I cant seem to find anything other than how to do it.
Can someone explain to me the process of archiving files and how it works. For example , after marking for archiving do they go to a specific folder where I can find all documents I marked. Do the files have to be exported in order to archive.

Marking content for archiving only flags the documents, it doesn't yet perform any archiving. You would need to then use M-Files Admin to either archive old versions (if you want to still keep latest versions of the documents in the vault) or perform an export that destroys the documents from the vault after exporting if you want to fully move the documents out of the vault.
It may help to create a view that displays the documents that have been marked for archiving:
