Link will not open in Desktop until browser fully closed

Good morning,
We have been experiencing a persistent issue for a long time that is causing confusion among our users, who often believe that M‑Files is slow or is not working.

When a user clicks a link to open an object in M‑Files, the standard page/tab appears offering two options: Open in M‑Files Desktop or Open in M‑Files Web.

If they select “Open in Desktop App” (which is the option I encourage them to use), nothing happens - the object does not open, and the user is left waiting indefinitely.

However, if the browser is completely closed (or was not open beforehand) and the link is clicked again, selecting Desktop works normally. Once the browser is open again, the issue returns for all subsequent attempts to open objects in Desktop.

In summary, users can only open links in one of these two ways:

  • Choose the Web App (which always works), or
  • Completely close the browser before each attempt and then choose Desktop.

Of note, choosing “Open in M‑Files Web” never causes this issue.

We have tested multiple browsers, but the problem persists - it only affects attempts to open objects in Desktop.

Is there a cause for this? Has anyone else encountered this issue?
