Communication between M-Files vaults

Is there a way to view objects from another M-Files vault, something like an external object?

  • There are several ways to work with multiple vaults and their content in M-Files, depending on your specific scenario.

    1) Replication between vaults

    • M-Files supports replication of objects between vaults.
    • A common pattern is to maintain "master data" (e.g., Employees in an HR vault) in one vault and replicate it to other vaults where it is needed.
    • This is typically the primary approach when you need the same content available across multiple vaults.

    2) Integrations instead of replication (recommended for external data)

    • If the data originates from an external system (e.g., ERP, HR system, database), it is generally better to connect each vault directly to that source.
    • This avoids unnecessary duplication and ensures each vault accesses the most up-to-date data directly.

    3) Multi-vault search

    • The new M-Files Desktop supports global search, allowing users to find relevant objects across multiple vaults from a single search.
    • A similar capability existed in the classic desktop client via Search Results in Other Vaults.

    4) Cross-vault relationships

    • In the classic M-Files Desktop, it was possible to create relationships between objects stored in different vaults.
    • This functionality has been less commonly used, and equivalent support in the newer clients is still being evaluated.
