External File Source - Linking to Shared Folder doesn't work but import does

I'm trying to configure M-Files to link to an external shared folder.
I have entered the full path of the shared folder along with an account that can access that path.
If I choose the 'Link' option, select the Traditional Folder and press 'Apply', the process starts and then stops almost immediately.
Nothing appears in the M-Files client in the selected Traditional Folder.

I've checked the event logs and server logs and nothing is logged at all when i try to 'refresh now' on the external file source properties dialog.

If I choose 'Import' rather than 'Link', then the imported files appear as expected in the Traditional Folder and the process runs successfully.

Given that I'm not receiving any errors or warnings, and given that the import works, I'm struggling to imagine why the 'Link' option doesn't work at all.

Any ideas?

I am using an account that has access permission. I get no error / warning messages. In fact, I'm using the same account for the Import as I am for the Link - and the import works but the link doesn't! The funny thing is, with the Link attempt, nothing whatsoever appears in the server logs to indicate that the process has even started. Whereas with the Import, the process runs fine.
