The new M-Files Desktop offers you a modern and fresh experience to improve productivity in your daily work. The new client provides a consistent user experience across all platforms. All new feature development will mainly benefit the new client experience.
How to transition
To transition to the new M-Files Desktop, ensure your M-Files version is updated to June 2025 release for the latest capabilities. Depending on your deployment type and customization level, you may need to perform certain transition actions. Refer to Figure 1 and 2 for the necessary steps and follow the provided instructions.

Protocol change
The new M-Files Desktop exclusively supports the gRPC protocol. For self-hosted environments, you'll need to switch to use gRPC to enable the new desktop. If you're using M-Files Cloud, no changes are needed.
Please contact your IT representative responsible for your organization's network configurations and follow the guidelines Switching from RPC to gRPC in an M-Files System that fit your environment. This guide was updated on June 13th.
Another option is the migration to M-Files Cloud, where the infrastructure is managed for you and gRPC is enabled by default. To learn more about benefits, please refer to M-Files Cloud.
UI extension applications
If your M-Files environment has custom UI extension applications installed, the applications need conversion for compatibility with the new desktop and web. Please refer to The User Interface Extensibility Framework for conversion or contact your M-Files representative. For identifying whether your environment has custom UI applications, check Identifying custom UI applications.
