M-Files Network Folder Permission

Hi, we are configuring network folder and it works as expected. However, I do have some questions on the permission.

Let's say, in our vault, we have an automatic permission configured for a class - Proposals. For instance, only sales department would have full control for this.

We have configured a network folder and now able to see all the proposal using this connector. Whenever I wanted to change the class for the proposal from the network folder, the automatic permission is not applied. I am not sure why. Does it mean, when we promote an object, the permission will not be applied based on the automatic permission we have configured for class ?

In this network folder, we not only have proposal, but other document as well. We have the relevant class already in M-Files with their own respective automatic permission. However, it seems that the auto permission is not applied when we promote the object.

I am aware that in the admin configuration for the connector under general settings, we can configure to use M-Files NACL as Always. But this will impact the whole document. We wanted to apply permission once we promoted the object based on their own respective class but somehow it is not working like that.

Is this the expected behavior ?

  • I think that when you use the Network Folder Connector to display the content of such folders, the documents shown are only restricted by the (Windows) permission settings in that folder - not by permission settings in M-Files. The safe way would be to migrate the document rather than just promote it. When migrating you move the file away from the original folder and place in the M-Files vault. It gets encrypted and protected by M-Files. As long as it remains in the network folder someone can move the file or rename the file or something in its path, and your link from the M-Files document object will be broken. This is not safe.

  • Thank you Karl. I just tried playing around with Google Drive Connector and the behaviour is the same.
