Best way to replace imported file.

You are on the right track, you will need to develop a small extension for this if you are using file sources for importing (or alternatively import the files in a different way). Currently there's no built-in way to do this unfortunately.

Note that I would always update the first document that is imported into the vault and delete the later imported document after updating so that the full version history is maintained. In your original message you suggested deleting the previous version and keeping the latest one, but this way there would be no version history available (unless of course this is what you want).
