M-Files Web Editing Documents Without Download

Quick question with the web version of M-Files. I rarely use the web version but I know the majority of my counterparts will be. I noticed that when I checked out a document that’s part of a workflow and made some changes to the document, it asked me to save as. Is there a way to get around the download option? I want the document to retain its versioning.

  • You have a couple of options here:

    • If you want to use desktop applications to edit documents (for instance with desktop versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint), you can install M-Files Web Companion from the M-Files Web menu. This will help with checking out files for local editing and checking them back in. So in a way you are still downloading the file but the editing experience is much smoother, closer to M-Files Desktop.
    • If you want to edit Office files in the browser, you can enable Microsoft Office for the Web Services for M-Files.
      • If your vault is hosted on M-Files Cloud, this will use Microsoft 365 services so you need a valid Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • If your vault is hosted on-premises, you need to have Office Online Server deployed for this browser-based editing.
  • Thanks Joonas! I'm at a lost here, I tried to find the M-Files Web Companion based on the instructions and it wasn't there. My vaults are hosted on M-Files vaults, I will have to wait I guess until M-Files support gets back with me. I just found it a little odd that the files are handled the same with the web version. Thanks again for your help.
