If the vault uses Microsoft SQL Server as the database engine and you store the file data in a file system folder (instead of the vault database), you need to manually run the Optimize Database (Thorough) operation. This is the only way to remove any destroyed files from the file data server in this type of setup.

Also do note Joonas' use of the word "destroy" vs your use of the word "delete".  These are two different operations; deletion is not sufficient.

If the file data is stored in the database, then the space is freed immediately during the destroy operation. However this is not a recommended setup in production use, you should usually have the file data on disk for performance reasons.
