I am configuring M-Files notifications with Ms Exchange online and not mail sources.

yes yes, the document talks about Configuring Mail Sources in M-Files but I'm trying to configure notification sending with Exchange online.

You're right: I made an assumption there.  I can't see a support article on this.  My guess is that the core issue is the same (connectivity between M-Files Server and Exchange Online), but the answer probably won't specifically be the same port as that article describes.

It could even perhaps be TLS 1.2 not being supported on the host OS.

You need to enable TLS1.2 on the server.
