What is the best way to assess the current size in GB of an on-premises vault?

The vault is currently configured as a Firebird vault. 
 Is it just the size of the M-Files folder on the server? 
 And then secondly, is there a way of seeing if all the used drive space on the folders is indeed used or if there are white spaces available or temp data that can be removed?

You can check the sizes of the MetaData and FileData folders for the vault: Checking the Size of a Firebird Metadata File 
 Vaults also have secondary data such as search indexes and document preview files but these are not included for instance in vault backups since they can be regenerated.
